ABOUT US

centreThe Cochrane Temiskaming Children’s Treatment Centre officially opened its doors in April of 1980.  The Centre is one of 21 such agencies in the Province of Ontario.  The Centre is funded by the Province of Ontario, Ministry of Children and Youth Services. (MCYS)

The Centre’s catchment area includes both Districts of Cochrane and Temiskaming – stretching from the Northwest corner of the District of Cochrane in Hearst to the Southeast corner of the District of Temiskaming in Latchford.  The Centre also covers Moosonee and Moose Factory on the James Bay coast.  Therapists travel on a regular basis to its outreach communities.

The Centre established satellite offices in 1984 and 1985 in Kirkland Lake, New Liskeard and Kapuskasing.  A fourth office was established in 2009 in Moose Factory.

After operating out of leased quarters in South Porcupine and subsequently in
Timmins, in April of 1998, the Centre moved into its permanent location.  The building is named “Kinross Place” (named in honour of its largest donor).  The Centre is located on the corner of Ross Avenue and Highway 655.

Between 2000 and 2002, the Centre Staff planned and raised funds in the Community to build an accessible playground on the site of our new building.
The whole community enjoys the park, named “Timmins Kiwanis Funland”, so-named due to our major donor, the Timmins Kiwanis Club.

Clinical Staffing

The Centre employs:

  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physical Therapists
  • Speech Language Pathologists
  • Social Worker
  • Recreation Therapist.

The Centre also employs Therapy Assistants, who provide therapy services under the supervision of the Therapists.  The Centre employed 4 Staff Members in 1980 and now has grown to 30 Staff (2010).

Caseload

As Staffing has increased, so has the overall caseload at the Centre.  Currently, (2010) the Centre’s caseload is between  600 – 700 children.  Services include consultation, assessment, treatment and education. Children may be seen on a regular basis by the Therapist or the Therapy Assistant.  Programming may also be developed by the Therapist and carried out by family members, day care workers, respite workers or by educational assistants in the school system.

The child/youth may also attend Centre Clinics or Programs.

Students

Whenever possible, the Centre offers placements for students at the high school, college and university levels.

Research

The Centre participates in and promotes research, and works closely with such organizations as CanChild  (affiliated with McMaster University) and Holland Bloorview Centre.

Governance

The Centre was incorporated in 1979 and has its own Board of Directors.  The Board meets at least ten times a year.  Board Members are recruited from all parts of the Centre’s catchment area.
