Occupational
and Physical Therapy
These
professionals are licensed with the College of Occupational Therapists of
Ontario and the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, respectively.
They encourage, through assessment and intervention, the
development of physical and mobile independence and achievement of a
productive and satisfying lifestyle such as the ability to play at home,
in the community and participate in school.

Intervention
facilitates the achievement of the child’s maximal functional
independence by incorporating the following:
-
Exploring the
child’s environment including the use of mobility equipment such as
crutches, walkers, manual, or power wheelchairs.
-
Promoting balance and
coordination skills such as running, jumping, hopping, and skipping.
-
Increasing the use of
the child’s hands to cut, print and play.
-
Improving written
communication skills including adaptive equipment such as the use of a
computer.
-
Facilitating the
performance of independent activities of daily living (i.e., dressing,
feeding and community based activities).
-
Enhancing
visual motor skills, perceptual abilities and sensory motor
integration.
Speech
and Language Therapy
A Speech and
Language Pathologist is a professional who is registered with the College
of Audiologists and Speech and Language Pathologists of Ontario.
This professional provides a variety of services aimed at helping
individuals develop effective communication skills.
At the Centre
these services include:

Helping children with
speech delays and disorders to speak more clearly.

Improving a child’s
understanding of language (receptive language).

Improving a child’s
expressive language skills, cognitive-communication skills (reasoning,
problem-solving, memory, organization) and pragmatic skills
(communicating in social situations).

Assisting
in the evaluation and selection of an augmentative and alternative
communication system (communication
-
Board/book,
voice synthesizing computer) and written communication system (word
processor, computer, editing programs).

Consulting with
parents and other professionals regarding feeding difficulties.
-
Providing services for
children with voice and resonance difficulties (cleft lip and palate).
Social
Work
A Social Worker
is a professional who is registered with the Ontario College of Social
Workers and Social Service Workers. This
professional provides clinical services on an individual, family,
couple/dyadic and group basis. This
is provided through a variety of services aimed at helping the individual
and his/her family to cope and adjust to a new diagnosis and/or acquired
trauma. The focus of
involvement is often related to the impact of crisis, disability and
hospitalization on the family. The
focus may be related to other psycho-social needs or problems identified
by the family such as finances, lack of support services, mental health of
family members etc. The
clinical service interventions include:
