PROJECT: AUTOMATED SLUICE GATE SYSTEM
This project comprises an exposed steel superstructure supporting hydraulic cylinders which lift the 5 M x 5 M gates, twenty six (26) hydraulic cylinders provide 5.8 M of vertical travel for thirteen of the fourteen gates. Located along the crest of the dam, the steel superstructure consists of box type built-up strongbacks fabricated from two channel shapes spaced 178mm back-to-back with top and bottom cover plates. The strongbacks are supported on hollow structural section braced columns spaced at 4.5 M centres. Total allowance for thermal expansion/contraction of the structure over its length of 63 M is 60 mm, based on a minimum winter ambient temperature, including wind chill factor, of minus 75 degrees Celsius. Laterial loads were calculated for 14 gates in the full-up position. Each hydraulic cylinder provides 25000 lbs of lift with a stroke of 197.85", bore of 6" and rod size of 3.5".
