Grouting is the art-science of forcing a fluid into voids, cavities or cracks where it will harden to strengthen foundation material, fill large voids under foundations, arrest water movement through permeable soils or cracks in concrete, masonry or rock, reintegrate weakened concrete or masonry structures, or convert preplaced aggregate into solid, first-class concrete.

Ensuring that grout completely fills voids of uncertain or variable dimension, that are also out of sight, requires techniques and skill based on experience and training. Choosing the right grout material for penetrability, strength and bond; specifying the procedure; and selecting suitable equipment, calls for years of engineering know-how developed on the job. And providing a selection of grouting materials for use under wide variety of conditions is a matter of scientific research in both the laboratory and the field.
