PIER UNDERCUT BY FLOODS - STABILIZED AND REPAIRED

A diving inspection revealed serious undermining of one pier (eroded space 6 in. to 2 ft. high by 10 in. to 2 ft. horizontally) most mortar joints in all piers eroded out to depths of 6 in. or more, and many stone blocks loose. Discovered before collapse or serious settlement, the piers were restored by:

(i) Placing flexible forms under the edges of the undermined pier and inflating them with non-shrinking grout. Voids under the pier behind the expanded flexible forms were then pressure grouted with non-shrinking grout.

(ii) Eroded or weakened mortar joints in all piers were raked clean and repointed. Holes were then drilled into the interior and all loose joints grouted tight.
