PROJECT: RECONSTRUCTION OF FOUNDATION FOR
SWITCHGEAR
AT SUBSTATION MSB
Reason for Project
Observations showed that the substation foundations were on the worst
type of frost susceptible soil, had indeed heaved and would continue to
heave, based on the existing soil conditions.
Scope
of Work
- Construction of concrete foundations and steel beams to support
the existing switchgear support slab.
- Repairing the existing switchgear support slab.
- Removal of existing foundation walls to 200 mm below final grade.
- Excavation of existing material around existing foundations.
- Repairing the existing fence.
- Installation of asphalt around existing transformer and tower foundations.
- Site drainage.
The remedial work items detailed as follows were not included in
the original scope of work but were required for the proper function of
Substation MSB and the elimination of any potential future malfunctions
which could cause power outages and/or damage to equipment. 
- Switchgear (cabinet) was 3 1/2" to 5 1/2" out of line
and required jacking and levelling. Concrete was placed on top and underside
of existing slab to the depth create by realignment.
- Transformer foundation had settled - transformer was jacked to level
position with created void filled with concrete.
- Tower was 6" out of plumb - tower was jacked to level and plumb
position with anchor bolts adjusted accordingly.
