Sixth Bishop of Timmins
| Bishop Paul Marchand, S.M.M., was born on April 17, 1937 at Lafontaine,
Ontario, near Georgian Bay. After his secondary school at the college
of the Montford Fathers at Papineauville, Quebec, he joined the Company
of Mary where he made his profession on August 15, 1956. He studied
philosophy and theology at Saint John's Scholasticate in Vanier, Ontario.
Ordained a priest on March 17, 1962, he pursued his studies in pastoral
theology (St. Paul's University and the University of Montreal) and Sacred
Scripture (summer sessions at the University of Montreal).
As a Montfortian priest, Bishop Marchand was mainly involved in preaching parish retreats. He continued this ministry as Director of the Centre for Christian Renewal in Drumondville (1967-1973 and 1979-1982). From 1973 to 1987, he was Director of the Maison d'Accueil and Director of the Sanctuary of Marie Reine des Coeurs in Montreal. He became Parish Priest of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Vanier until 1990 when he was appointed Provincial Superior of the Montfort Fathers of Canada (1990-1993). He was holding this office when Pope John Paul II nominated him Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa where he was ordained on August 20, 1993 in Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica. On March 8, 1999, Bishop Marchand was appointed Bishop of Timmins and his pastoral ministry was inaugurated on the 17th of May. Bishop Marchand is |
