Extend-a-family is a community support program that offers
planned out-of-home respite care for children and youth 0-21 years of age
with developmental and/or physical disabilities in Timmins and surrounding
areas.
Through Extend-a-family, families are finding supportive relationships and new respite options. The program is designed to offer ‘productive respite’ essentially; parents are offered relief while their children take part in community-based activities that have the specific goal of social development.
There are numerous and varied benefits for people participating in Extend-a-family
and for the community at large. A
child with special needs has the opportunity to expand his/her circle of
friends and to develop meaningful friendships outside of their own family.
Exposure to new activities and new people also help children with
disabilities prepare for more independence in the community.
