Ray Cyr, Past District Governor of the Lions Clubs in Northeastern Ontario, smiles happily
as he receives four thousand dollars from Richard Moore, Past District President of the Retired Teachers’ Organization of the same area.
The money is a grant from the teachers’ provincial organization to do some vital upgrading to Joan Caron Camp Munro, a recreation facility for physically and mentally challenged individuals from across the north. It is part of the Retired Teachers’ “Service to Others” project, which injects fifty thousand dollars a year into community charitable, social and educational needs.
A volunteer board centred in Timmins administers Camp Munro. Additional support and co-operation is provided from Lions Clubs within an area loosely bounded by Moose Factory, Kapuskasing, Sault Ste. Marie, Manitoulin Island and Magnetawan. Lions know this region as “District A5.”
Besides his active involvement with his service organization, Lion Ray is also the Facility Chairman for Camp Munro, a volunteer position that is almost full time in the summer.
