About the Toastmasters Program

What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International (TMI) is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a world wide reality. Through member organizations like the Porcupine Club, TMI helps people learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking-- vital skills that promote self actualisation, enhance leadership potential and foster interpersonal and professional relationships.

The Club's mission is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment. Every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which result in self confidence and personal growth. For more information on Toastmasters International, visit their official website.

Recognition and Certification

The first level of recognition is the Competent Toastmaster certification (CTM), achieved upon completion of the basic speech manual. After attaining the CTM, members may work towards more advanced levels of recognition in communication or leadership.

Why should I join?

Toastmasters is about more than good communicications skills. Through the development of better speaking and listening skills, you improve your leadership and management abilities, too.

Of the top CEO's in Fortune 500 companies today, the majority have said that "good communications skills" helped them get to the top. And if you're in business, you're in good company with the Toastmasters. Tom Peters, best-selling author, management consultant, and professional speaker, credits Toastmasters with helping thousands of successful people achieve their personal and professional goals.

Toastmasters isn't just for business people. No matter who you are or what you do, better communications skills make you feel and sound more confident, professional, and credible. Whether you're trying to hone your skills for a job interview, or trying to become more comfortable when speaking at committee meetings, the Toastmasters program has something for you. And the price of an annual membership is less than the cost of a one-day professional development seminar.

What will I learn?

There are two main tracks in the Toastmasters Program: Communications and Leadership. You may follow either or both, depending on your interests, time, and objectives. The first booklet, the Competent Toastmaster Manual, consists of 10 speeches that you present over time, and is common to both programs. You may want to review the excellent on-line summary of the contents of the other speech manuals, posted by District 21 Toastmasters in BC.
