2006-2007 Commander Lorne Hillcoat - Message

The 2006 - 2007 season gained momentum relatively early with the TTPSS holding their AGM on May 12- 14 while also hosting the Voyageur District AGM.
Friday night's Pig Roast and Social was highlighted by the induction of our 8 new CPS Graduates and the TTPSS AGM which swore in the 06'-07' Bridge.
The Voyageur District AGM was held Saturday with the induction of the District Bridge and a special visit by CPS Training Officer Louise White; followed by a bus tour of New Liskeard and Haileybury; followed by a Historical Mining Tour of Cobalt - "Ontario's Most Historical Town". The evening was capped off with a tasty banquet and a special presentation by the Voyageur Canoe Club which was a cultural and historical re-enactment of Lake Temiskaming's fur trading era.
For those who braved a cool Sunday morning, we took a boat trip down Lake Temiskaming to Devil's Rock and the South End Spit of Burnt Island, a favourite weekend spot for local boaters, which rounded out the weekend. For more information and photos please click here.

What with attempting to get some serious boating in this summer, our roster was not as full as it could have been, but we held a very successful WOW (Women on Water) Program this summer; held a couple Courtesy Inspection Days at both the Haileybury and New Liskeard marinas, a fire extinguisher demo, provided assistance to the Haileybury Yacht Club with the BOOM Program; and hosted the First Annual (which many members of TTPSS participated in, but was not a sanctioned TTPSS event), "Entre Amis - Boating Between Friends" Event, which brought together Power and Sail boaters from our Ontario side and boaters from the towns of Ville Marie, Guiges, Notre Dame du Nord, and as far down Fabre Quebec for a Friday Night and Saturday event packed weekend.

Plans for this Fall and Winter are to again run the CPS Course, a Radio Course, and possibly a GPS Course; and to hold our Annual Winter Warm Up Social in January.

A special thanks to our Webmaster Valerie Boal for a job well done, and to Past Commander Bill Ramsay and the other seasoned Bridge members who have provided guidance in my inaugural term.
Lorne Hillcoat
TTPSS Commander

Brief History of the Tri-Town Power and Sail Squadron (write-up by Alex Mageau)

The Tri-Town Power and Sail Squadron charter was presented to Art Morley, the first commander, by Bob Beale of Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons on October 7th, 1974.

Charter Members were W. Alexander, C.T. Cameron, L.E. Charbonneau, G.V. Gagnon, M.J. Gagnon, L.N. James, M.L. James, K. Leopold, E.F. Maddock, R.A. Maddock, D.W. McLaughlin, A. Morley, M.K. Ross, M.E. Ross, J.F. Smerdon, G.R. Weston.

The original Bridge members were Art Morley, Ernie Maddock, Millie Gagnon, Marg Ross, Marjorie James, Lorne Charbonneau.

The squadron has progressively increased it’s membership to 90 in 2006 with a very active training programme in both the Boating and BoatPro courses.

There are currently 10 members who are certified by Transport Canada to carry out Courtesy Boat Safety Inspections.

Our squadron was the first in Canada to offer this service and has now been expanded nation wide.

On its 30th anniversary, the squadron received a letter of appreciation from National relating to our dedication to safety and training in recreational boating.

June 16, 2006 Boating Safety Day:

A boating safety day was held on June 16, 2006. The planned events were:

Courtesy boat inspections at both the New Liskeard and Haileybury Marinas from 9:00 to noon. Bring your boat by land or water and have our trained inspectors check out your safety equipment - if you boat passes you get a sticker for the windshield indicating you had the correct equipment and your boat was safe to operate.

Women on Water - a hands-on training session for women only to teach boat handling, trailering, backing-up with a trailer, launching a boat and general safety.

A fire extinguisher demonstration at the New Liskeard waterfront at 1:30 p.m. Bring your own extinguisher and learn how to use it

Thanks to all who helped with this very successful day.

Lake Temiskaming 2006 Boating Season:

While the weather this summer could of been better we still had a very enjoyable boating season. The vastly improved docking and campfire facilities at Burnt Island made that bay a very busy social spot. Much thanks to Ghislaine, Denis, Derry and all of the other boaters who worked so hard to make this location what it is. Also many thanks to the owner to allow us to use his property. Please respect this property and keep it neat and clean as we are very fortunate to be allowed to use this docking location.

Around the numerous camp-fires we all munched on pork from the pig-roasts, supplied and cooked by Matt and Carole Duke.

As the nights turned cold unfortunately our boating came to a halt for this 2006 season.
