her listed as born 1887 in Leicester.Info from Tanya Harrington: Her mother
died when Ethel was 7 years of age and she was taken into the home of
her uncle ? Sharpe. Ethel grew up with his daughters (Dot and Freda).
My guess: This Uncle George SHARPE must of been the husband of her Mother's
sister Abigail PETTIT. George was a commercial traveller
Ethel was nicknamed "Dovey". Dot married into theWilliam Southwells
(line of Tanya Harrington) Freda married a French man (Meunier ?) and
had daughter Annette.
George Sharpe lived on Mitchell Street in Kettering - his eldest daughter
was called Minnie and son Ronald, then Dot and Freda.
Dorothy Sharpe married Harold Southwell of Kettering (born 1896, died
1986). Harold was one of 8 children of William and Elizabeth (nee Loake
of Melborne, Derbyshire) Southwell. Dorothy and Harold had 2 daughters:
Pamela (born 1927) who married Percy Pashler in 1952 and had 6 children
(your parents have their wedding photo); and Pauline (born 1929) who married
Thomas Armstrong and had 3
children, Nial in 1958, Andrea in1962 and Susan in 1963.
Pauline had a very close relationship with Ethel Lowe, or Aunty Ethel
as she called her, and after her mother Dorothy died, Pauline looked after
Ethel and when she died made all the funeral arrangements etc. We can't
remember exactly when Ethel died but my mother thinks it was the 1970s,
though your parents say in the 1960s. They could be right - my mother's
memory is not what it was! I knew Ethel until about 1961/2 when I moved
away. She had developed some form of dementia and was in a care home for
the elderly.
Ethel used to speak about her brother 'Walt', as she called him. That
must be your grandfather. She and some of my family used to visit him,
and my mother remembers him visiting Kettering. She distantly remembers
Ethel's aunt Abigail Coulson (Mary Ann's sister born 1865?) who lived
near my great grandmother in Regent Street. She recalls our family sympathising
because this Aunt Abby, when she was quite elderly, had been left with
a small child to bring up. My great grandmother & family moved to
Regent Street in 1911 so it must have been after that.

Ruby (Mom) died within 1½ hours at 4:00am on August 25, 2005 at
Bluewater Health, Mitton St., Sarnia, Ont. Canada. She was cremated that
same day at 4pm. There was a memorial service held for her on Monday,
August 28, 2005 at J. D. Robb Funeral Home. On Tuesday myself (Valerie),
Dad and Pat went to Lakeview Cemetery for a "Scattering of the Ashes"
in the "Garden of Memories". On the pink granite central stone
there was a plaque with her name placed on it. Dad requested the East
side as it faced England.

She was of French descent. Ruby Edna Griffin who is grandaughter of above person told me this. Ruby didn't know how many generations back they emigrated from France. Eliza named her daugher (my Mom's Mother) "Jennett" as her middle name, which is a French name. She is not on the Lewes 1881 Census.
Mom has a prayer book from Edward Strong dated Jan 1, 1886.
In 1901 Census it listed her as a "Stoker's Apprentice" at age 46! But that is a mistake as she was her husband's "Slater" apprentice.Info from Peter Strong: In 1886, Eliza Jennet Motton married Edward Strong of Lewes, Sussex (his place of birth and a market town with minimal industry). I've not yet discovered the manner of their meeting but the fact that he was a slater, and other slaters in the family had started to work outside of their home town of Lewes by the latter half of the 1800s suggests Edward may have been working in Portsmouth (50 miles from 'home' and a direct rail service available by then).
By 1891, Edward and Eliza had taken up residence in Eastbourne (at 2 St Leonards Road), and only 15 miles away from Lewes where there were still family of his to visit. They had had 2 sons, Edward (3) and Henry J (1).
The 1901 census advises this Strong family had relocated to a new economic zone, the expanding industrial city of Leicester, at the address 14 Margaret Road. Edward (47) was still a slater, apparently accompanied by his wife Eliza Jennet who is listed as an apprentice slater (We found her listed as a Stoker's Apprentice). Their son, Edward, is now 13 and perhaps not so much of a scholar, is working as a slater too. Henry J is still at school, sister Jennette M is 7 and George A 6 years old.

On Tuesday myself (Valerie), Dad and Pat went to Lakeview Cemetery for a "Scattering of the Ashes" in the "Garden of Memories".
