First named Old Fort, then Longwood, due to its position on Longwood's
trail, and later named Wendigo with the arrival of the Great Western
Railway in 1856. After the town was wiped out by fire in 1878,
it was renamed Melbourne, after Melbourne, Derbyshire, England.
The name Melbourne is derived from a mill(mel) stream (bourne).
