The beaver is probably Northern Ontario's most industrious worker and while a lot of people consider the beaver as a pest, it creates wetlands and ponds by constructing dams, for use by ducks, moose and other wildlife. Beaver houses and ponds also make for great fishing areas as bait fish use this type of area for cover, thereby, larger fish are normally around a beaver house. Although dams sometimes cause local flooding of back roads and highways, these dams help reduce the flooding downstream and help the control runoff caused by heavy rains. A beaver dam of more than 300 m (1000 ft.) long was found in Colorado USA at the Rocky Mountain National Park. Vistors coming to the Virginiatown area, which is located 40km (25 miles) east of Kirkland Lake and 250km north of North Bay Ontario are bound to see northern Ontario's most industrious worker at work.
