The Ruffed Grouse commonly called a partridge or a Ruffled Grouse is just one of 17 birds around the world that fall into the pheasant family of birds. The partridge from the Virginiatown / Kearns and Kirkland Lake area of northern Ontario are a highly popular game bird for both the local residents and hunters from the southern parts of the province with many North Bay residents hunting in the area as well as hunters from the USA and are in abundance in the Virginiatown area, located on the northeast arm of Larder Lake approx. 10km from the town of Larder Lake. This area has many logging roads and ATV trails creating ideal hunting conditions for the Partridge.
The partridge is just one of the game birds in the local area and due to a expected lower Fox population, the Partridge and Spruce Grouse should be in abundance again this year.

Ruffed Grouse and Spruce Grouse (Another Partridge picture) season opens in Virginiatown (WMU 28) with hunting from September 15th to December 31. This area affords the hunter the ability to hunt on Sundays.
