Grouse (commonly call a partridge) is one of two partridge we have in abundance in our area of Virginiatown, northern Ontario as we have both the Ruffled Grouse and the Spruce Grouse. The grouse is given it's name due to the ruff of black feathers at the side of it's neck. These feathers a larger in the male then the female, and are widely spread during courtship. The male stands erect spreads his wings and drums his wings at a real fast rate making a sound that resembles a kids lawn mower being pushed really fast. Both are a highly popular game bird. But in my opinion the ruffled grouse is the much better tasting bird, as the spruce has a lot stronger taste. Virginiatown is located 40km (25mi.) east of Kirkland Lake northeastern Ontario and 250km north of North Bay northern Ontario.

Spruce Grouse (commonly called Partridge) (Another Partridge picture) season opens in Virginiatown (WMU 28) with a hunting from September 15th to December 31. This area affords the hunter the ability to hunt on Sundays.
