Shown above is a 1999 photo of Toburn Mine headframe, located in the east end of the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada. The "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow is Toburn Gold Mine which produced 570,659 ounces of gold bullion from 1,186,316 tons of gold ore at an average grade of 0.48 ounces per ton in the forty some years it operated from 1912 to 1953. A Toronto based mining entrepreneur, Pat Sheridan, attempted to revitalize the old mine in the flow through ‘80’s but only managed to install the new red cladding before his funds dried up.
The mine was the first producer of the famous seven Kirkland Lake gold mines and was originally called the Tough-Oakes Mine. The property had been staked by the Tough Brothers and Sir Harry Oakes shortly after Harry arrived in the camp. It would later become the Tough-Oakes-Burnside Mine which was shortened to Toburn.
