
Birchtree Mine, owned by INCO LTD, started production in the late 1960's as a 4,000 TPD underground nickel mine, north of the 55th parallel near Thompson, Manitoba. Following a 10 year closure the mine was reopened in 1989 & in 1996 the shaft was deepened for access to deeper ore to supply feed for INCO's smelter in Thompson.
For 10 months in 1996, Bill Glover was site manager for underground contractor, Alex MacIntyre & Associates Ltd, at the Birchtree Mine. The jumbo development & underground construction contract at the Birchtree Mine employed 45 contract miners & tradesmen in 1996. Bill has returned to Thompson in 1997, 98 & 99 on assignment in Northern Manitoba & Saskatchewan.
