My Teacher is an Alien
Student Study Guide
Answer all questions in sentence form.
Chapter One-- Missing--One Sixth-Grade Teacher
Vocabulary: piccolo, mimicked, maliciously, sullenly, trembling, soggy, rehearsals, grudgingly, cope
Enrichment: Is fighting ever justified? Explain your position in writing and then discuss it with a friend.
Should combative sports such as wrestling and boxing be banned from the olympics? Explain.
Describe some methods of getting along with people you don't really like. Devise some strategies for dealing with bullies and share them with a friend.
Chapter Two-- Note of Doom
Vocabulary: doom, pregnant, blathered, curriculum, banned, philistine, humdinger
Enrichment: Pretend that you are Susan Simmons. Write a note to Ms. Schwartz trying to convince her to return to your classroom.
Chapter Three-- An Unearthly Noise
Vocabulary: essay, frivolous, clutched, staggered, crumpled, shutters, accomplish
Enrichment: Start a diary pretending that you are Susan Simmons. Make one entry for every chapter you read. Share the "daily" entries with a classmate.
Chapter Four-- Broxholm
Vocabulary: flinched, prevented, slithered, ridges, massage, hideous, shimmer, alien, barbaric, garbles, schedule
Enrichment: Record a variety of sounds and then play them back to your classmates one at a time and have them guess what the sounds actually are.
Chapter Five-- How Strong is an Alien's Nose?

Enrichment: How would you react if someone in your class told you that they had seen an alien? How would you be able to judge whether or not they were telling the truth?
Authors often select names for characters in their novels that are representative of their personal traits. Examine this book and others stories to see if this is true. (Hint: Dr. Bleekman). Write your own short story employing this writing technique.
Chapter Six-- Drafting Peter

Enrichment: Write a short biography on Bruce Coville. Students may use the internet or any other materials they can find on the author.
Chapter Seven-- Night Expedition
Vocabulary: indignantly, attic, slime, PTA, cahoots, whirling, rummaging, echoed
Enrichment: Design a title page. Create a bookmark that promotes this novel and use it.
Find a book in the library on making masks. Create your very own alien mask and then model it for your classmates.
Chapter Eight-- The Alien's Lair
Vocabulary: velvet, scattered, indicate, entire, mission, drenched, dew, disgust, gestured, padlocked, eternity, lasers, latch, wispy, extraterrestrial
Enrichment: Write a short scene about Susan and Peter searching the house. Include lots of dialogue and then act it out in front of the class with a friend. Be creative.
Chapter Nine-- The Force Field in the Attic
Vocabulary: intelligent, universe, column, frizzy, tingling, telepathy, average
Enrichment: Do you think there is life on other planets? Defend your position.Do you believe in telepathy? Do some research on the subject and conduct some of your own experiments.
Chapter Ten-- Solo Effort
Vocabulary: desperately, casting, romance, angle, secure, gab, formal, crucial, reveal, innocent, galaxy, shuddered, flattered, lame, prowling, credit
Enrichment: What galaxy do we inhabit? How many galaxies are there according to astronomers? Contact a local astronomy club and see if you can view the stars or even invite a local amateur astronomer to give a talk.
Locate some of Sousa's music and play it for the class.
Chapter Eleven-- Parent Conference
Vocabulary: conference, mug, fluttered, dimple, pulse, pubescent, appropriately, cultured, trudged, lair, den
Enrichment: Although there are no language translators for extraterrestrial beings, they do exist for foreign languages. Find a site on the net that automatically translates your English message into a foreign language. Experiment with it!
Chapter Twelve-- Things Get Weirder
Vocabulary: confirming, chauvinist, gnawed, crick, baboon, saint, wimpy, pathetic, withering, polyester, outrage
Enrichment: Pretend that you are the editor for the Kennituck Falls Gazette, a weekly newspaper in Kennituck Falls. Write up a piece describing what happened at school the day the alien was unmasked. Make it dramatic as you want to sell plenty of newspapers.
Chapter Thirteen-- Rumors
Vocabulary: impatient, category, reputation, blushed, source, rumor, complicate, basic, social, motivated
Enrichment: Do you believe that it's okay to tell "little white lies"? Have you ever lied for reasons other than to protect yourself from punishment. Elaborate.
Chapter Fourteen-- What can Duncan Dougal Do?
Vocabulary: slots, suspicious, noble, sidling, gap, massacre, astonishment, insulting, lookout, hesitated
Enrichment: What are some of the real threats to our planet? Discuss with a classmate.
What do you think is the most serious threat we face on Earth today? How would you attempt to solve the problem?
Chapter Fifteen-- Hockey for Three
Vocabulary: sprinted, pale, impressed, belligerently, palms, naughty, temporary, tenant
Enrichment: Dress up as character in the story and have your classmates interview. Prepare at home first and don't be shy about making things up, after all this is fiction.
Chapter Sixteen-- Duncan's Disaster
Vocabulary: stairwell, mouthed, starship, sniveled, blubbering, furious, soloist, apologizing, reserved, session
Enrichment: Have you ever suspected that your teacher is an alien? Write a short story pretending that your teacher is an alien. Read it to your teacher and observe their reaction-- carefully!
Chapter Seventeen-- Teacher Conference

Enrichment: Design a comic strip depicting a scene from the novel.
Chapter Eighteen-- Concert Concerns

Enrichment: Pretend that you are Broxholm and write a letter home to your family describing what life is like on Planet Earth.
Chapter Nineteen-- Peter's Choice

Enrichment: Describe the types of vegetation and animal life that you might expect to find on another planet.
Chapter Twenty-- Piccolo Power

Enrichment: Design an alien spaceship. Make a model of the spaceship by constructing it with the materials of your choice.
Chapter Twenty-One-- Out of This World

Enrichment: Explain the science fiction genre? How is it different from regular fiction?Write an additional chapter describing what is happening to Peter and Broxholm.
