Why did Rudi feel as safe as if he were in his own bed at home?
Why did Rudi think that Captain Winter was so deserving of making it to the summit?
What is meant by a trial and error method?
How did the men know that the Needle was solid?
Why was Rudi the only one able to succeed in getting through the Needle's Eye?

What conflict or struggle is going on in Rudi's mind when he Saxo tells him to continue alone?
Why is he so determined not to call out to his uncle and Captain Winter for help when he spots them on the mountain?

Enrichment: The struggle going on in Rudi's mind is not uncommon. Many times in your life you will have to make choices. Describe an incident where you had to make a choice that you knew was right but would have preferred to do something else instead.
Chapter 19--The Conqueror
Decribe the scene when the climbers arrived at the village of Kurtal.
To whom did the mayor refer as the conqueror of the mountain?
How did Captain Winter respond to the praise given him?
Who is the hero of this story? Give reasons why you feel this way.
Rudi embraces his mother and the author uses the phrase "…he saw beyond the tears". What exactly did Rudi see beyond his mother's tears?
Vocabulary: lean, haggard, pealed, din, canton
Enrichment: What is a hero? Do you think they actually exist in real life? Do you know anyone that you would say is your hero? List the qualities that you think would be essential in a hero.
