Chapter One-- The Old Man

Enrichment: Do some research on the author, Shane Peacock , and present your findings to the class.
Design a title page for your guide making sure you illustrate it.
Design a bookmark and illustrate it.
Chapter Two-- The Confession
Vocabulary: mansions, quintuplets, moral, ranting, descendants, parched, ensconced, sternly
Enrichment: Describe how you might feel if someone told you that you would be moving to a new community. List the pros and the cons.
Research the "old growth" area of Temagami. Do you think the area should be logged? Don't reach any conclusions until you have done some research.
Research the Dionne quintuplets.
Who were the Group of Seven and how many people were actually in the group?
Debate the pros and cons of harvesting the "old growth" forest in Temagami.
Chapter Three-- Out in the Cobalt Cold

Enrichment: Research the town of Cobalt and be sure to include its famous silver rush.
Chapter Four-- Wynona Dixon

Enrichment: Research the town of Haileybury including its founder C.C. Farr. Print up some information and photos from the internet and create a bulletin board for your classmates.
Chapter Five-- The Bullet

Enrichment: Research the game of hockey. Where did it originate and were there actually professional hockey teams that played in Cobalt, Ontario, Canada? Make a short presentation to the class.
Chapter Six-- Inside the Haunted House
Vocabulary: frustrated, heritage, acquire, launching, herds, abandoned, fumbled, far-fetched, gingerly, filthy, decomposing, compost, exasperation, numbing, stride
Enrichment:
Pretend you are the author and write a beginning for the next chapter before you actually read it. Then read your version to some of your classmates before they go on to read chapter seven. Finally have them read the actual chapter seven and compare it with yours.
Write a letter to Dylan Maples. Make sure to share the letter with your classmates. With some of your classmates create a bulletin board displaying the letters.
Choose another title for the book and then justify why your title is superior to the original one.
Chapter Seven-- In Front of the Fire

Enrichment: Tell your classmates about the most interesting part of the book.
Chapter Eight-- What Happened Long Ago

Enrichment: Host a party for the characters in your book. Make sure that your classmates are willing to research and then assume the roles of the characters in the book. Prepare invitations and food. Turn it into a real party. Don't forget a camera to record the event for posterity.
Chapter Nine-- Cheated

Enrichment: Talk to a prospector or geologist and research how an individual stakes a mining or land claim. Make a short presentation to your class.
Research the history of hockey in Cobalt and its environs including the town of Haileybury. Make sure to include some of the former hockey teams as well as the famous hockey players.
Chapter Ten-- The Silver-Rush Towns

Enrichment: Research Grey Owl and locate some of his books in your library. Do you believe any good came from his charade? Explain.
Chapter Eleven-- Caught!
Vocabulary: warrant, foil, petered, muffled, sprinting, scaled, sleuth, villain, strategically, squinted, queried, sheepishly, simultaneously, extraordinaire, nudge
Enrichment: Write a letter to your local librarian explaining why you think they should have "The Secret of the Silver Mines" as part of their permanent collection. Mail it.
Give a book talk to your classmates or even another class explaining why you think they should read "The Secret of the Silver Mines".
Pretend you are a publisher designing a poster to promote your newest release, "The Secret of the Silver Mines".
Chapter Twelve-- Theo's Trick

Enrichment: Write an imaginary dialogue between Dylan's mother and father as they discuss Dylan's recent misbehaviour and how they intend to deal with it. Present the scene to your classmates.
Chapter Thirteen-- Sins of the Father's
Vocabulary: formulas, ascended, promotion, confront, defiant, predicament, outcast, grim, standoff
Enrichment: Make a timeline of all the important events that have occurred in the story. Continue adding to the timeline as you finish reading the story.
Chapter Fourteen-- The Lights Go Out
Vocabulary: contract, intensity, scheme, incinerating, frontier, bade, lulling, frail, incriminating, deflating
Enrichment: Pretend you are a reporter for the Temiskaming Speaker, the local weekly newspaper, and conduct an interview with John Maples about how the case is progressing. You may wish to prepare a set of questions first and then actually interview one of your classmates who is willing to assume the role of John Maples.
Chapter Fifteen-- Leaving a Trail
Vocabulary: bold, hesitate, obstacles, bragged, slithering, option, tattered, lit, humiliate, flicker, critically, dawning
Enrichment: Ask your teacher if you can give a book talk to another class in your school about the novel. Make sure not to give away the ending yet arouse the interest of the students so that they will be interested in reading the book themselves.
Chapter Sixteen-- Underground
Vocabulary: abruptly, treacherous, traction, clutching, superstitious, shudder, crumple, splintered, sealed, feat, burrowed, plunged, scurried, groped, claustrophobic, slighter, bowels, horizontal, petrified, extracted, shaft, mature, suicide, crude, despicable, ingots, stope, carbide, sloshing
Enrichment: Prepare a ten question multiple choice mini quiz for your classmates on the novel. Administer the test and see who receives the highest score.
Chapter Seventeen-- He Knew
Vocabulary: vantage, frantic, deft, avalanche, glittering, escort, reaction, dejected, excavated, sermon, murals, prime, mukluks, significance
Enrichment: Write a different ending to the story. Then share your new ending with other students and conduct a vote on which ending your class enjoyed the most. Don't forget to read the original ending.
Pretend a scene or even an entire chapter has been "lost" from the original book and that the publishers have hired you to rewrite it. Rewrite the scene or chapter and present it to your class.
Write a letter from one character to another. For example, write a letter from Dylan to his friends in Toronto.
Read another book by Shane Peacock such as The Great Farini or The Mystery of Ireland's Eye.
