Abitibi De Troyes Waterway Park: The Twin Falls Marina, just 9 KM (5 mi.) east of Iroquois Falls is the gateway to Abitibi De Troyes Waterway Provincial Park. This park was created to preserve the primitive wilderness, rugged beauty, abundant wildlife of Lake Abitibi and the archeological Indian treasures of Long Point. Sargeant Aubrey Cosens (Victoria Cross): Located adjacent to Highway 11, just south of the intersection of Highway 11 and 67 at Porquis Junction, this plaque honours one of Ontario's Victoria Cross winners of extreme bravery during the bitter fighting in Holland in 1945. Aubrey Cosens was born in Latchford and raised in Porquis Junction. He was posthumously awarded the Commonwealth's highest decoration for valour. Frank H. Anson Monument (1839 - 1923): Located in Anson Park across from the Trinity United Church, this monument was erected by the Abitibi Paper Company and the citizens of Iroquois Falls. It commemorates the founder of Abitibi-Price Inc. and the town of Iroquois Falls. Artefact Collection: The Jordan Collection - Lake Abitibi artefacts are housed in the Iroquois Falls Public Library. This collection consists of over 1,000 pieces and is the 15th largest of its kind in the world. Some of the artefacts are dated pre ice-age. some are historic and some are pre-historic. Also on display is a model dig including maps. The library is located on synagogue street. Black River - Abitibi Small Craft Waterway: For those who prefer canoeing or smaller boats, the access point is located at the edge of town. Numerous picnic sites are scattered over the 30 km (18 Mi.) route which follows the path of the De Troyes expedition. |
